| ST PATRICK , New York ,America , 1858-1888 History of St. Patrick`s Cathedral, was built in memory of St.Patrick who was reputed to have baptised converts from barbarism into Christianity. As the largest decorated Gothic-style Catholic Cathedral in the United States, it has been recognized throughout its history as a centre of Catholic life in America. The Church was built as a result of the dream of John Hughes who was the first Archbishop of New York. In 1859, after the foundation was laid, the process of construction was interrupted by Civil War in America. It was not until fourteen years after the end of the Civil War that the Cathedral was rebuilt and completed under the direction of John Cardinal MC.Closkey from 1882 to 1884, and then in the years 1885, the twin spires were built. |
